THE INTERVIEW

What does coffee mean to you and your country?

Coffee is a way of life for me in plantations located in the hilly district of Coorg. Coffee means a lot to us as we wake up in the morning with a cup of coffee. Coffees in India are a diverse range of 16 coffees, grown in different regions, at various elevations, nourished by many different soils and tended to by the loving hands of various kinds of people from different cultures, cousins, languages, art forms and religions. It is a major source of livelihood to the people in the coffee growing regions and contributes immensely to the economy of our country.

What is your favorite place in your country?

My favorite place has always been Coorg which is known as the Scotland of India. It forms the major part of the western ghat of our country being home for several species of flora and fauna.

What is your history with illycaffè?

We have been working with illy for 15 years. We have been part taking in various quality competitions instituted by illycaffè over the years. We have stitched a strong partnership with them and we take pride in associating ourselves with illy.

How do you drink coffee?

I prefer to have the traditional South Indian coffee prepared by traditional filter, occasionally with a dash of milk and sugar.

How do you get the perfect coffee?

The 5 elements that make our coffee perfect are Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space.

Earth: The variety of soil adds a unique flavour to the coffee of this region. Different species of shade trees present in our estates  nurture our coffee.

Water: Our coffee is nourished by amounts of rainfall at different times of the year, at different stages of life cycle of the crop.

Air: Our coffee is grown at high altitudes.

Fire: Fire in this context is the enthusiasm with which our people tend to them with love, commitment and passion.

Space: Our coffee shares space with herbs, fruits etc., and other flora and fauna in the region lending unique and distinctive flavour.

Eco friendly cultural operations and sustainability practices make our coffee unique in the industry.
