Costa Rica

Johnny Marin Badilla

THE INTERVIEW

What does coffee mean to you and your country?

Coffee for Costa Rica means culture and tradition since it has been for almost two centuries the main source of income for many families. In my personal case it means a lot of commitment and pride since I am the third generation of a family that is cultivating the golden bean, as we call coffee here. Those of us who are part of this generation in the Marin family would like to pass this legacy on to our future generations, transmitting their social and environmental commitment.

What is your favorite place in your country?

A place in Costa Rica that I like a lot for its nature and its attractions is Monteverde.

What is your history with illycaffè?

We have been working for more than 5 years with illycaffè. This has led us to a great process of maturity and learning. Now we are all very focuses on quality control and details, as the company showed us. Everyone has something to learn, from the picker to the person who pulls the coffee, the one who receives it, to the one who measures it, to the one who processes it, to the one who has to manage the quality control laboratory or the drying: we are all involved in the illy circle to produce that excellent coffee. This gives us a technical and sustainability enrichment, year after year, helping us to face the new challenges that are increasing. Their direct and personal treatment is excellent, they transfer us the commitment to produce the best coffee.

How do you get the perfect coffee?

Beside love and passion that comes by growing coffee, for me the perfect coffee  is the one that, through quality allows us to generate a greater balance in the social and economic part, allowing us in the meantime to deal with climate changes.
